Program Overview
Miniversity delivers one of the largest English as a Second Languages programs in North America. Designed to help students improve English language skills through classroom instruction and immersion in Canadian life and culture.
The program focuses on four core language skills — listening, reading, writing, and speaking — with 5 progressive levels following the Ontario Ministry of Education ESL curriculum guidelines. Students are assessed upon arrival and placed in the appropriate level.
Progression
5 ESL Levels
ESLAO — Level 1 — Beginning (Grade 9–12, Open)
No prerequisite. Builds on students’ previous education and beginning English skills. Focuses on short conversations, basic structures, and adjustment to Canadian life and culture.
ESLBO — Level 2 — Developing (Grade 9–12, Open)
Prerequisite: ESL Level 1. Continues building language foundations with expanded vocabulary, paragraph writing, reading comprehension, and guided discussions.
ESLCO — Level 3 — Intermediate (Grade 9–12, Open)
Prerequisite: ESL Level 2. Extends listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Includes short classroom presentations, academic vocabulary development, and introduction to Canadian citizenship concepts.
ESLDO — Level 4 — Advanced (Grade 9–12, Open)
Prerequisite: ESL Level 3. Prepares students to use English with increasing accuracy. Includes informal debates and seminars, and develops research skills for academic work.
ESLEO — Level 5 — Bridge (Grade 9–12, Open)
Prerequisite: ESL Level 3. Prepares students for secondary school English at the college/university preparation level. Develops independence in reading and writing for academic success.

Reading
Critical reading strategies for academic texts, literature, and media to build vocabulary and comprehension skills.
Writing
Structured essay writing, paragraph development, research papers, and academic conventions for university readiness.
Speaking
Presentations, group discussions, classroom conversations, and pronunciation development for confident oral communication.
Cultural Immersion & Field Trips
Our ESL program goes beyond the classroom with field trips to iconic Ontario destinations, helping students practice English in real-world settings and experience Canadian culture firsthand.
